In 1924, Max and Joe Eckerling, two Austrian immigrant brothers, founded the Universal Overall Company in Chicago, where they manufactured workwear. At the time, jeans were referred to as overalls, which were worn over other clothing by miners. Today, the company is still a family-run business that specializes in producing twill and denim. Universal Overall has expanded its product line over the years to include bib overalls, shop coat aprons, coveralls, and shop coats. The company places great importance on textiles and design details, such as pocket size, stitch work, and herringbone weave. Universal Overall’s archival designs are still in use today, and the company continues to improve its products.
